Verizon Motorola XOOM ICS update has begun rolling out

If you're a Motorola XOOM owner on Verizon, we've got great news: The 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update has begun rolling out. We saw the Verizon update roadmap a couple weeks ago, suggesting that the ICS update could drop at any time, so it's nice to see it hit not too long afterwards.

There are a lot of enhancements that come with this update. The four features that Verizon is taking the most time to point out are:

The Launch Bar, which allows you to drop applications, shortcuts and folders into and access from any homescreen
Usage Center, which Verizon has been highly touting as of late. It lets you keep track of your data usage
Notification Pop Up Box, which contains all of your inboxes and notifications in one streamlined box
Folders, you've all seen ICS folders by now, so you'll get to create and use them on the XOOM screen as well

There are many other benefits from the update though. Here is a list:

Exchange/Activesync policy improvements
EAS security and sync fixed
Email search
Updated browser with faster rendering

There is lots to like about this update, so if you have a XOOM, keep an eye out. If you haven't received it yet, sit tight, it's rolling out gradually. It is an OTA update, so all you have to do is go to Settings -> About Tablet -> System Update to check to see if you can get it.

Home improvement is a fantastic hobby for anyone who wants to improve their living conditions and at the same time save themselves a lot of money. The satisfaction of building your own furniture or creating a great layout for one of your rooms is palpable, and at the same time you?ll be sure to impress any guests who you tell.

That said though, DIY can have its drawbacks. Of course there?s the chance that your items will end up looking shoddy, and it can make quite a mess, but more importantly you also need to think about the potential risk involved when doing DIY which is a very practical job. Here we will look at some elements of home improvement and how to make them more safe.

Going on the Roof

If you are making a roof garden, clearing out or replacing your gutters, or changing your roof tiles, then you will likely be going up on a ladder to reach. This is of course potentially dangerous so you need to ensure you take every precaution possible to be safe. First of all, make sure that you have someone with you at all times to help hold the ladder and to be on standby in case you should need help. Meanwhile ensure that you wait for good weather before you attempt to get on the roof and don?t rush it. Finally, never ?reach? across the roof and make sure that as you progress along you take the time to climb down, move the ladder, and then climb up again. Otherwise you can tip the ladder and fall.

Building Your Own Items

When working with wood it?s important to take precautions to avoid hurting yourself. For one you should always invest in some thick leather gloves and this way you can avoid hammering a nail into your finger or sawing it. At the same time you should look into using goggles which can prevent wood chippings etc. from getting in your eye.

The other potential risk when making your own furniture and working with wood is that you end up creating a piece of furniture that is dangerous. One precaution to take that some people forget here is to sand down corners which can be sharp and cause you to cut yourself or cause a splinter ? so make sure you remember that.

The other issue is that people build furniture that can?t hold the weight that it needs to ? this might cause a chair or a bench to collapse and cause you to fall, or it might result in a bookshelf falling apart and injuring someone by bombarding them with books. The solution is to ensure that you design your furniture to take at least three times the weight that you expect it to need to stand up to, and that you ensure that you test your furniture too under safe circumstances before going on to use it day-to-day.

Lifting

Finally moving things around your rooms can be quite dangerous as this can cause you to pull a muscle, slip a disk or generally injure yourself. It?s important here to make sure that you practice proper lifting technique and that means that you should always squat down and then push through your legs to lift ? never use your back to bear the weight and aim to keep it straight at all times.

More precautions when lifting are to make sure you have both hands underneath the object to support it and to get help lifting whenever something seems like it could be too heavy.

Art @ Home: Literary Friday: The Yellow House

This week I read The Yellow House by Patricia Falvey. ?I love reading books by Irish writers, especially those from Northern Ireland as I am from Scotch-Ulster descent.

This book chronicles the story of the O'Neill family and their home, the "yellow house," situated at the base of Slieve Guillon mountain in Ulster. ?Eileen O'Neill is a child when her Da brings home gallons of canary-yellow paint for the home's exterior. ?The O'Neills are celebrating the centennial of Warrior Hugh O'Neill's victory over the wealthy Sheridans: Hugh won the house in a card game and the family has called it home for 100 years. When Eileen climbs Slieve Guillon, she realizes the yellow house stands out above every structure for miles around. ?Eileen is a proud O'Neill, and her Da calls her his "little warrior" because she is an O'Neill through and through.

Shortly after the O'Neills' house painting party, ? a series of unfortunate events devastates the family and they lose the yellow house. ?Eileen is taken in by family friends and begins work in one of the local linen mills. ?She grows up during a time of change and civil unrest in Ireland-- World War I, which quickly segues into civil war. ?Eileen becomes involved with the IRA as she lives up to her little warrior legacy. She becomes involved with a handsome political activist, James Conlon, and a dashing and wealthy mill owner, Owen Sheridan. ?The Sheridans are Quakers and known for their fairness: They do not discriminate between Protestants and Catholics. ?This love triangle is one of the most dramatic I have read in a long time. ?There are many surprises in the plot, and it is a very well-written book.

The Yellow House is chock-full of history, romance, drama (tons of it), family secrets, action, intrigue, and suspense. ?Eileen's prickly and defensive personality made me much less sympathetic toward her. ?I wanted to shake her for most of the book, and I had to constantly remind myself that she had been traumatized by violence and tragedy at a young age. ?However, the ending is very satisfying, and readers should appreciate Eileen's transformation.

I enjoyed The Yellow House so much that I am currently reading The Linen Queen (also by Falvey). ?Its story is centered around World War II, but so far I don't think that it's a sequel.

Wal-Mart's annual meeting dogged by investor ire

Wal-Mart brought in Aerosmith and Cheap Trick to perform at its annual meeting Friday, but it looks like the nation's largest retailer might have been better served by referees than by rockers.

The event in Fayetteville, Ark., which coincided with Wal-Mart's 50th anniversary celebration, was accompanied by vocal dissatisfaction from prominent shareholders such as?the?New York City Comptroller's Office, which controls pension funds for city workers,?and the California Public Employees' Retirement System. Both?pledged to vote against the of re-election board members who were part of the company's upper echelon when widespread bribery was alleged to have transpired within the retailer's Mexican division, according to an extensive investigation by the New York Times.?

"[S]hareowners like us can deliver a strong message about the need to restore credibility to Wal-Mart?s boardroom to protect long-term value for shareowners.??New York City comptroller John Liu said in a letter to shareholders last week.?

Liu's letter was in response to recommendations made by two firms that provide proxy advisory services. "Recent allegations of bribery at the company's Mexico subsidiary, and particularly the response of senior management in Bentonville, call into question the ability of the company's leaders to protect shareholders' investments," Institutional Shareholder Services wrote in a May report.

However outside shareholders vote,?any change would need to be initiated by the Walton family, which has a controlling stake in the company's governance. The family so far has shown little willingness to address shareholder calls to remove certain directors and to not conduct its bribery investigation in-house.

In an e-mailed response to Msnbc.com Friday afternoon, Wal-Mart spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said?the company takes compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act seriously and that it continues "to strengthen its anti-corruption programs around the world."

"In March of 2011, Walmart initiated a worldwide review of its anti-corruption program, including a global review of its policies, practices, and controls for FCPA compliance.? This includes developing and implementing recommendations for FCPA training, anti-corruption safeguards, and internal controls in every country in which we operate," Buchanan said.

She said the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors is conducting an internal probe. "A thorough investigation will take time and we are in the early stages. It would be inappropriate to comment further on the specific allegations, or for us or others to come to specific conclusions until the investigation is finished," she said.

Shareholders are?trying to make a point, said Charles Elson, a professor at the University of Delaware who specializes in corporate governance. He characterized the votes as a "futile effort," though, due to Wal-Mart's closely held majority.

Some analysts believe that an overwhelming vote of no-confidence on the part of institutional and other outside investors could prompt the company's leadership to act voluntarily. "I don't think they will ignore it if there is a significant protest vote," said?Paul Hodgson, a senior research associate at research company GMI Ratings. "They may make a few sacrifices," he predicted.

Hodgson predicted board members H. Lee Scott, a former Wal-Mart CEO, and Christopher Williams, chair of the company's audit committee, were the most vulnerable to being removed from the board because, if the bribery and subsequent cover-up alleged by the New York Times were true, both men were at the time in positions where they would ? or should ? have known about the activities, he said.

Wal-Mart also faced dissent in its ranks. Around 5,000 workers?attended the meeting,?according to CNBC, with some seeking more regulations regarding executive compensation as well as governance changes after the bribery scandal. In an interview with CNBC,?Jackie Goebel, member of employee group United for Respect, said associates wanted to see executives held to the same ethical standards to which rank-and-file workers were held.

If the company doesn't budge, disgruntled shareholders have one additional option: the courtroom. Just under a month ago, the California State Teachers' Retirement System filed a lawsuit against Wal-Mart's board and against?a host of current and former directors and executives, citing "highly credible allegations of rampant corruption."?

Elson said the suit is a legally viable alternative, although a highly quixotic one. "Shareholder suits are usually very difficult to win," he said.?

"The publicity attendant to that kind of a suit might induce the Waltons to make some changes but I'd be the last to predict that they will prior to the conclusion of their own internal investigation," said?Kent Hughes, managing director at Egan-Jones Proxy Services, an advisory firm that recommended shareholder vote against keeping H. Lee Scott and Michael Duke, the company's current CEO.

"I?do feel as though a suit made by a reputable party ought to carry some weight with the Waltons," he said. "It obviously puts some pressure on them, but if it's conclusive pressure, I don't know."
