26 die as last day of Iraq pilgrimage hit by bombs

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Two car bombs in Iraq's capital killed at least 26 people Saturday on the last day of a Shiite pilgrimage already hit by multiple bombings. The blasts, one in a heavily guarded area close to a revered shrine, raised the week's death toll to more than 100 and cast further doubt on the divided government's ability to secure the country after the American withdrawal.

Black plumes of smoke filled the sky over Baghdad's northern Kadimiyah neighborhood, where the shrine to eighth-century saint Imam Moussa al-Kadhim draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year. One of the bombs tore into throngs of people who packed the streets nearby, carrying aloft symbolic coffins and beating their chests in mourning to mark his martyrdom.

Three days before, nearly two dozen coordinated bombs around the country killed 72 people. Al-Qaida's Iraqi affiliate on Saturday claimed responsibility for that attack, which marked one of the deadliest days in Iraq since the last U.S. troops left in December.

The fierce wave of bombings targeting Shiites suggest that the al-Qaida-allied Sunni militants are stepping up their periodic attacks ? which recently have come every few weeks ? to try to exploit sectarian cracks in the elected government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and possibly spark another round of the violence between Sunni and Shiite Muslims that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war only a few years ago.

The sheer number of blasts during the al-Kadhim pilgrimage shows the ability of al-Qaida to retain and perhaps rebuild its bombings networks despite heavy blows struck to the organization by U.S. forces and allied Sunni militias prior to the American withdrawal. The bombers' ability to penetrate so close to the shrine indicates the challenges faced by Iraq's security forces in securing huge religious gatherings.

"Those behind the attacks, they've become more determined now and see more of an opportunity because of the dysfunctional political process," said Salman Shaikh, director of the Brookings Doha Center and an analyst on regional politics.

The government is now split on mostly sectarian lines and over what critics say are al-Maliki's increasingly authoritarian tendencies. Sunni and Kurdish politicians say he is trying to increase his power at their communities' expense. While the wholesale violence between Sunni and Shiite neighborhoods and villages that killed tens of thousands in 2006 and 2007 has all but disappeared, the political tension has fostered a growing sense of pessimism.

"It's a fairly bleak picture right now," Shaikh said. He added, "This is quite depressing, considering we are approaching a decade since the initial invasion into Iraq."

The U.S. hailed the invasion it led in 2003 to topple Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein over his suspected weapons of mass destruction program as an opportunity to set up a model democracy in the Middle East. The U.S. troops left an elected government behind when they withdrew, but it still cannot provide basic services like reliable electricity.

Saturday's bombings highlighted the relative weakness of Iraq's security forces, unable to stop the attacks despite throwing up roadblocks, banning motorcycles and putting tens and thousands of police and soldiers around the city. After the explosions came grumblings that those measures were insufficient.

"There is no real security, no real searches," said Mohamed Ali, who witnessed the first bombing in Shula, where authorities a few hours later were towing away the burned remains of a car. "Today is an exceptional day all security forces must be on high alert."

The first car bomb went off just after noon, hidden in a taxi parked among a group of other cabs along the procession route. It killed 14 people including two policemen and wounding 46 others, a police official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

An hour later, a second parked car exploded in the Kadimiyah neighborhood itself, about five kilometers (three miles) from the al-Kadhim mosque. At least 12 people were killed and 26 were wounded, the police official said.

It was unclear how the car had penetrated the tight ring of security thrown up around Kadimiyah after Wednesday's multiple bombings. Police and soldiers had been searching vehicles and people at checkpoints leading into the neighborhood for days.

Despite the latest violence, Saturday's commemorations for al-Kadhim continued. The crowds swayed and sang along with music played over the mosque's loudspeakers and bands of men formed circles to dance and wail, throwing their hands in the air as they cried out for the imam. On the sidelines, people used hoses to spray water on the crowds to relieve summer heat that reached 47 degrees Celsius (117 degrees Fahrenheit).

"The terrorists will not discourage us," vowed a song played over the mosque loudspeakers, promising to keep the centuries-old pilgrimage alive "even if they cut off our bodies into pieces.

The mosque opened its doors to the pilgrims on Saturday's final day of the commemoration, allowing them to enter and pray at al-Kadhim's shrine before filing out of another exit.

In 2005, the al-Kadhim procession was struck by another tragedy when thousands of Shiite pilgrims panicked by rumors of a suicide bomber broke into a stampede on a bridge, leaving some 1,000 of them dead. Police later said no explosives were found on the bridge, and poor crowd control and the climate of fear in Iraq appeared largely to blame.

Myanmar boat people swap violence for desperation

GOLAR PARA, Bangladesh (Reuters) - At first, the boat bobbing in the water in the middle of the night appeared to be empty. But when Bangladeshi villagers took a closer look, they found a baby too weak to cry, a refugee from marauding mobs in Myanmar apparently abandoned by her family.

The cleft-lipped infant, just weeks old, is among hundreds of Rohingya Muslims who fled this month's sectarian violence in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine, packing themselves into rough wooden boats and heading for the shores of neighboring Bangladesh.

No one knows how many made it ashore. Bangladesh has ordered its border guards to push the boats back, determined that - with at least quarter of a million "illegal migrants" already here - there must be no more.

The baby, named Fatima by the family that has taken her in, is out of the danger that she and her family faced in Myanmar, but she joins a throng of stateless people in southeast Bangladesh who - for the most part - lead desperate lives of squalor, deprivation and discrimination.

Among them is Mohammad Kamal, a young religious leader from Rakhine's Maungdaw district, where ferocious violence erupted on June 9 between Rohingyas and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and spread across the state. He escaped to Bangladesh in 2006 after his brother and others were jailed in a crackdown on Muslim clerics.

Kamal, now 28, settled in a makeshift "unregistered" camp, where - along with some 20,000 others - he is not recognized as a refugee and where even international aid agencies have to work under the radar because Bangladesh has not granted them legal status.

"I went out for a walk one day last year and was arrested because I had no documents," said Kamal, pulling up a trouser leg to show a line of angry sores that broke out during the following nine months he spent in jail.

Behind him, naked children play in a muddy pool and the rickety dwellings of an overcrowded shanty town - his camp - rise up, lashed by monsoon rains.

In 2010, the authorities forcibly evicted thousands from a makeshift camp. The medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres recounted at the time that some Rohingyas had been thrown into the Naf River and told to swim the 3 km (2 miles) back to Myanmar, and the organization said it had treated many for beatings, machete wounds and even rape.

"A DESPERATE LIFE"

Craig Sanders, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees' representative in Dhaka, said that although Bangladesh has disowned the Rohingyas - dubbing them illegal economic migrants - it has shown "tremendous generosity over many years".

Rohingyas first came in large numbers to the South Asian nation in 1973, and over the years gained a reputation for drug-smuggling, gun-running and human trafficking.

A sudden flood of more than quarter of a million arrived in 1991-92 after a spasm of repression by the security forces in military-ruled Myanmar. Those that remain from that wave, now numbering some 30,000, live in two official camps where the U.N. provides everything from shelter and water supply to healthcare and schooling.

But at least 200,000 others - probably many more - have settled on the Bangladesh side of the 200-km (125-mile) border, mingling with the population where they struggle to find employment or squeezing into unofficial camps.

It is these "unregistered" Rohingyas who are most vulnerable.

"It's an extremely desperate life for these people," said one worker for a humanitarian group that provides assistance illegally at one camp, asking not to be named. "They have been here for such a long time and there is no prospect of change."

UNHCR's Sanders has crossed swords with the government in recent days over its decision to turn back the boatloads of traumatized Rohingyas.

"Bangladesh, one more time, is being urged to step forward to deal with a situation that is not of their making," he said. "We are not trying to push them into a corner on this issue, but there is a question of fair and right treatment here."

BANGLADESH SAYS "NO MORE"

There have been sketchy and conflicting reports of the communal violence that erupted in Rakhine, but scores are feared dead after widespread torching of houses by both sides.

Abdus Salam, one of 10 Rohingyas who reached Bangladesh and are now hiding in a coastal village to avoid arrest, told Reuters last week: "The Rakhine torched our houses, killed our relatives, assaulted our women. They were killing Muslims. When we protested, the government forces also shot our people dead. Then we started fleeing."

Muhammad Zamir, Dhaka's chief information commissioner, maintains that the authorities have treated the boat people humanely, providing those they turn away with water, medicines and fuel for the journey back, assisting a woman who gave birth on arrival and treating those with gunshot wounds in hospital.

"We want to help the refugees, they have rights," Zamir told Reuters in the coastal town of Cox's Bazar, a bumpy three-hour drive from the shores where Rohingyas are being pushed back.

"But we can only look after them to a point. We really can't handle any more."

He argues that, as a densely populated and poverty-plagued country of 150 million, Bangladesh has played its part. Now, as democracy stirs in Myanmar, it is time for its neighbor to address the root causes of the chronic exodus of Rohingyas, and for the international community to put pressure on it to do so.

SILENT CRISIS

There has been some dismay in this part of Bangladesh at the hard line taken by the government on the new arrivals. The populations share the same ethnicity, religion and dialect, and they are so close that if you call a Rohingya on a mobile phone in Myanmar it is likely to be a Bangladesh number.

Yet the plight of those already here gets little attention.

A report by U.S.-based rights group Refugees International last year described a "silent crisis" of abuse, starvation and detention faced by stateless Rohingyas in Bangladesh.

According to UNHCR, a 2011 survey in the two official camps found that 17 percent of children between six months and six years were suffering from acute malnutrition, higher than the emergency threshold set by the World Health Organisation. In the makeshift camps, malnutrition rates are even higher.

"It's a hopeless situation," said the aid worker. "You treat the children who are sick, and then they fall ill again because they are not getting the right food."

For now at least, tiny Fatima is safe. She has been taken in by a fisherman and his wife who already have four sons and two daughters. But an uncertain future awaits her, stateless in the land of her refuge.

Obama spares many illegal immigrants deportation

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who were brought into the United States as children will be able to avoid deportation and get work permits under an order on Friday by President Barack Obama.

In a move that seemed to be aimed at Hispanics whose enthusiasm for voting in the November 6 election could be crucial to Obama's re-election chances, the president acted to potentially protect 800,000 people from deportation proceedings for at least two years.

Obama, who previously was reluctant to impose such an order even as Republicans in Congress blocked immigration reform bills he supported, called his action "the right thing to do."

His announcement was on the 30th anniversary of a Supreme Court decision that said children of illegal-immigrant parents were entitled to public education in the United States.

It allowed Obama, whose administration has faced criticism from some Hispanic groups for deporting about 400,000 illegal immigrants a year, to draw a sharp contrast between himself and Republican Mitt Romney, his opponent in the election. Romney, in trying to appeal to his party's most conservative voters, has taken a harsh stance against illegal immigration.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Obama emphasized that his stop-gap policy did not grant amnesty or citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants. He said that such people "are Americans in their hearts and minds; in every single way but one - on paper."

Both Democrats who praised Obama's move and Republicans who attacked it agreed that Congress ultimately should decide the permanent fate of immigrants who were brought to the United States illegally by their parents.

Most Republicans continue to clamor for more law enforcement before considering any loosening of immigration rules for the estimated 12 million people who are in the country illegally. Obama emphasized various steps he has taken to secure the southwestern U.S. border, the entry point for most of the immigrants living illegally in the United States.

POWER OF THE PRESIDENCY

Obama's order was the second time in two months that he has reached out to a key Democratic voting constituency. Last month, he said for the first time that he supports legalizing gay marriages, a move that while largely symbolic, won him praise and campaign donations from the gay and lesbian community.

Friday's appeal to Hispanics came at a time when Obama's popularity has dipped amid new worries of a weakening economy and a deepening European financial crisis that further threatens American jobs.

Meanwhile, Republicans in the deeply fractured U.S. Congress have blocked most of Obama's domestic initiatives, some of which he said would have created millions of jobs.

Obama's order came a week before he is scheduled to address a meeting of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials in Florida. Romney also is set to address the group next week.

The meeting is likely to feature Florida Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican who has pushed for legislation that would help children of illegal immigrants.

Obama's order also came as the U.S. Supreme Court is considering a challenge to Arizona's strict immigration laws that target people living and working in the state illegally. A ruling could come as early as next week.

A 'POWER GRAB'

Romney, campaigning in New Hampshire, said Obama's move made it more difficult to reach a long-term solution for young illegal immigrants "who come here through no fault of their own." He said he would like to see legislation to help such people but did not offer a plan of his own.

Early this year, during the Republican presidential primaries, Romney said he favored "self-deportation" in which illegal immigrants realize they would be better off returning to their native countries after employment restrictions left them unable to find work in the United States.

Other Republicans were more harsh in criticizing Obama.

"Today's announcement by President Obama is a politically motivated power grab that does nothing to further the debate but instead adds additional confusion and uncertainty to our broken immigration system," said Obama's 2008 Republican challenger for the White House, Senator John McCain of Arizona.

Another Republican, House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, called Obama's order a "breach of faith" that Smith said will have "horrible consequences" for unemployed Americans who are looking for jobs only to find that illegal immigrants will work for less money.

Some Republicans suggested that Obama's move could face legal challenges but several law professors said Friday that it is unlikely that Obama's order could be challenged successfully in court. Presidents have broad executive power for such temporary orders and prosecutorial discretion.

George Washington University law professor Orin Kerr said criminal enforcement is the domain of the executive branch and deportation decisions would fall under that authority.

University of Houston law professor Michael A. Olivas said Friday's directive is well within a president's usual authority.

Political analysts cast Obama's move as a savvy strategy for what could be a very close race for the White House.

"The Obama administration knows it's in a very tight race and if the margins that it enjoyed among unmarried women, gays, Hispanics and blacks don't hold, then he might end up on the wrong end of this thing," said Cal Jillson, a politics professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. "So he's going around and touching all these bases."

OBAMA'S REVERSAL

Under Obama's plan, those who qualify would be allowed to live and work in the United States for two years and could be eligible for extensions, the Obama administration said.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who made the initial announcement of Obama's order on Friday, said that illegal immigrants up to 30 years old who came to the United States as children and do not pose a risk to national security would be eligible to stay in the country and allowed to apply for work permits.

To avoid deportation under Obama's plan, a person must have come to the United States under the age of 16 and have resided in the country for at least five years.

They must be in school or have graduated from high school or be honorably discharged from the U.S. military. They also must not have been convicted of any felony or significant misdemeanor offenses.

Obama has long supported measures to allow the children of illegal immigrants to study and work in the United States, but efforts to pass such measures in Congress have failed amid objections by Republicans.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act passed the House in 2010, when Democrats controlled that chamber. But it fell a few votes short in the Senate, amid strong Republican opposition.

Friday's announcement was a victory for Hispanic groups that have long called on Obama to use his executive powers and it marked somewhat of a reversal by the administration. Last July, in a speech to the National Council of La Raza, Obama said he was reluctant to bypass Congress.

There are up to 2 million illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children and who remain in the country, according to immigration group estimates. U.S. officials said the new measures would affect roughly 800,000 people.

Most of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States are Hispanics. There are now 51 million Hispanics living in the United States out of a total population of 309 million.

Facebook Depression/Issues

I don't know if anyone else on here is a real FB user, but I am.
I find that I experience periods of time where I'm really lonely and I might go for a long time waiting for contact online, and I start to get depressed instead.

Sometimes I won't stop myself and I'll write stuff that comes off as bitter or awkward, when it's really just because I'm feeling down.

I find myself blatantly ignoring or deleting posts about ppl in relationships/engagements, etc., because it all makes me feel desperate and down on myself.

What do you guys do when/of you experience this?

(I won't be deleting my FB account)

I think eventually one gets tired of waiting on online contacts for social interactions and becomes motivated to try something different. You know, a desire to analogue/fleshy interactions and doing stuff. That's what's been going on with me and spending more time trying to break out and open to people, as in a lot more time/effort/investment spent on social stuff.

I even deleted friends who weren't really writing back to me or paying attention or if I questioned if they genuinely were friends. Though to be fair, most of them are adults with families, kids, work, commitments and don't have time for long FB chats as they used to or don't care anymore because they have what they need, as in a spouse or are popular already or are living the dream.

They are probably still nice folks, but, I do have a need for people who will be around to chat with and available and who WANT to chat with me, not "Have to" chat with me. Friendship shouldn't be work. WAAAY too much work in society already.

The problem is, I've been starving myself for social and sexual interactions for YEARS and now that need is large. People my age aren't able to provide that. So it's difficult to re-establish the social groove. But it's like anything that you placed on the back burner which now needs rebuilding.

So yes, it's a lot of work. But I think in the end, it'll be worth it.

It being wedding season, dozens and dozens of people on my Facebook have gotten engaged/married of late. And, yeah, it depresses the hell out of me. I just try to ignore their posts and/or not log on much when I'm in a bad mood.

I can relate to this, but it really only serves to further isolate you. "She's bitter and awkward. Better not talk to her." I journal a lot when I'm depressed about this kind of stuff - it gets the bad feelings out and down on paper without alienating anyone.

I can't think of any benefit to publically posting depressive stuff. I mean, I've done it on Facebook too but NOONE CARES.

Take sad's advice. Write it down for you and never show it to anyone but maybe a therapist.

Yeah, I think I might want to start journaling.
Part of the reason I came back here is that I needed to get this stuff of my chest without putting in on FB.

And it *is* wedding season. Feels like it's what EVERYBODY's doing right now. I just take that stuff off my feed right away.

Y'all are right about that. In fact, I'm "man of honor" for my best friend in her wedding here soon. I'm happy as hell for my friends getting hitched, though! It makes me wist about being in a loving relationship. Maybe I'll meet some other lonely singles at the wedding

Part of my job is managing business facebook pages, so I am on the damn site all day. It is evil and if I ever change jobs I will delete my account. I get so depressed and jealous whenever I am on there. All I see are people getting married, traveling with their partners, having kids, flashing engagement rings and it brings out feelings in me that I do not want to deal with. I am happiest whenever I am not on there and just living my life outside of social media.

I also have a wedding coming up next month, it truly is wedding season...

Anyway, about the writing bitter/awkward stuff on facebook, I would definitely try to avoid that at all costs. Most people use facebook to chat with friends, share good news, funny videos, songs they like... light stuff. When someone has a meltdown on there it's usually only a source for gossip and the person is left even more alienated. Like sadtwin said, a journal could help. If you need feedback you can either post here or maybe get an anonymous blog?

If it's too much to handle you could try going a few days without logging in.

Coffee consumption and prostate cancer risk: further evidence for inverse relationship.

Nutrition Journal 2012, 11:42?doi:10.1186/1475-2891-11-42

Published: 13 June 2012

Abstract (provisional)

Background

Higher consumption of coffee intake has recently been linked with reduced risk of aggressive prostate cancer (PC) incidence, although meta-analysis of other studies that examine the association between coffee consumption and overall PC risk remains inconclusive. Only one recent study investigated the association between coffee intake and grade-specific incidence of PC, further evidence is required to understand the aetiology of aggressive PCs. Therefore, we conducted a prospective study to examine the relationship between coffee intake and overall as well as grade-specific PC risk.

Methods

We conducted a prospective cohort study of 6017 men who were enrolled in the Collaborative cohort study in the UK between 1970 and 1973 and followed up to 31st December 2007. Cox Proportional Hazards Models were used to evaluate the association between coffee consumption and overall, as well as Gleason grade-specific, PC incidence.

Results

Higher coffee consumption was inversely associated with risk of high grade but not with overall risk of PC. Men consuming 3 or more cups of coffee per day experienced 55% lower risk of high Gleason grade disease compared with non-coffee drinkers in aanalyses adjusted for age and social class (HR 0.45, 95% CI 0.23-0.90, p value for trend 0.01). This association changed a little after additional adjustment for Body Mass Index, smoking, cholesterol level, systolic blood pressure, tea intake and alcohol consumption.

Conclusion

Coffee consumption reduces the risk of aggressive PC but not the overall risk.

President Pranab Mukherjee? Will quit Finance Ministry on June 24, say sources

New Delhi:?Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, according to sources, will run for President. He is expected to file his nomination papers on June 25, if he is ratified as the UPA candidate at a meeting of its allies today, which has begun. He reportedly remains the first choice of his party president and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi. Congress sources say Mr Mukherjee will resign as Finance Minister on June 24, after the Prime Minister returns from the G-20 summit in Mexico. (If Pranab moves on, who'll be Finance Minister?)

Who will become the next President of India could rest largely on Mulayam Singh Yadav, the head of the Samajwadi Party. Congress sources say that back-channel talks have succeeded and that he is likely to support Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.? Mamata Banerjee, however, reiterated this morning that Mr Yadav, like her, remains committed to backing former President APJ Abdul Kalam for a second term. Without the support of Ms Banerjee, the UPA has about 38 per cent of the votes in the electoral college that will elect the President. To get past the 50% mark, the Congress is lobbying the Left. ( Who is Pranab Mukherjee? | APJ Abdul Kalam )

For now, Mr Yadav is keeping everyone guessing - he travelled to Lucknow via Agra and refused to comment on the presidential election there. A senior leader of his party and his brother, Ram Gopal Yadav, said Mr Yadav will make up his mind at a later point. The silver lining for the Congress is that Ram Gopal Yadav has said that contrary to popular belief, the Samajwadi Party does not want mid-term elections. Ram Gopal however made it clear that their party will not join the UPA coalition, but will continue to provide external support.

Ms Banerjee emphatically denied reports this morning that Mr Yadav is opting out of the liaison they have formed, throwing the Congress into a seizure. (President Kalam, 80, or President Pranab, 76? Top 10 facts)

"Our clarion call to all parties...is no jhagda...no ego...we should support APJ Kalam...he can bring glory to the country," Ms Banerjee said this morning, asserting that the nuclear scientist will run for President. But in Patna, Dr Kalam was circumspect, saying that he would make a decision at a later time. He confirmed that different political leaders - he did not name them - are in touch with him. (Kalam will contest, says Mamata, but he is undecided; so is NDA)
?
Sources say he will not contest the election if there's a chance that he could lose. Without Mr Yadav's numbers, Mr Kalam would find it tough to be elected. The opposition BJP is watching the Congress closely. It is not opposed to supporting the Finance Minister, but it has also toyed with backing Dr Kalam. (Your choice for President? Vote Here)

Just in case Mr Yadav does not deliver, the Congress has phoned its allies ahead of today's group meeting and warned that the Mamata-Mulayam combine was trying to topple the government.

Ms Banerjee and Mr Yadav would stand to benefit from mid-term elections because they delivered stellar performances in recent elections in their state, and would like to leverage voter sentiment before their honeymoon period expires.

Both the Trinamool Congress and the Samajwadi Party are critical to the government's survival. Here is how the numbers add up in the Lok Sabha - the UPA including the Trinamool make up 274 MPs. The Samajwadi Party has 22 seats in the Lok Sabha, with which it offers outside support. Without the Trinamool's 20 MPs, and the Samajwadi Party out of the equation, the government will be reduced to a minority of 255, and forced to look for outside support elsewhere. In the electoral college, the two have a crucial 11 per cent and, as such, can push for Dr Kalam as President with the help of the opposition alliance NDA and some others.
