Black Music Month, first proclaimed in 1979 by President Carter, will be celebrated during the month of June. The University of Arkansas is partnering on several activities in celebration of the contributions of African American singers, musicians and composers.
University of Arkansas students, staff, faculty, alumni and friends are invited to volunteer at the First Thursday Fayetteville event June 7. - Kick-off event May 26 at George?s Majestic Lounge featuring Motown/Stax tribute program with local band Soulful Sound; event begins at 9:30 p.m.
- Street Dance at First Thursday Fayetteville event June 7 on the Fayetteville Square celebrating all things Soul Train; event begins at 5 p.m.
- Screening of a VH1 documentary on Soul Train with a brief panel discussion, also June 7 at 6 p.m.; coordinated in part by the Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education, a part of the office of diversity affairs, at the university.
This year marks the fourth celebration of Black Music Month in Northwest Arkansas. It was originally started as an outreach effort to share culture and history with the community as the region became more diverse.
