Emirates cancels Damascus flights, Internet goes dark

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels battled forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad just outside Damascus on Thursday, forcing the closure of the main airport road, and the Dubai-based Emirates airline suspended flights to the Syrian capital.

Residents also reported Internet connections in the capital were down and mobile and land telephone lines working only sporadically in what appeared to be the worst disruption to communications in Syria since an uprising began 20 months ago.

The past two weeks have seen rebels overrunning army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power that he has used to bombard opposition strongholds.

Rebels and activists said the fighting along the road to Damascus airport, southeast of the capital, was heavier in that area than at any other time in the conflict.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a opposition monitoring group, said clashes were particularly intense in Babbila, a suburb bordering the insurgent stronghold of Tadamon.

Nabeel al-Ameer, a spokesman for the rebel Military Council in Damascus, said that a large number of army reinforcements had arrived along the road after three days of scattered clashes ending with rebels seizing side streets to the north of it.

"There are no clashes directly around the airport; the fighting is about 3 or 4 kilometers away," he said via Skype, adding that rebels had taken control of many secondary roads and were expected to advance towards the airport.

He said that he hoped the proximity of the rebels to the airport would dissuade authorities from using it to import military equipment, but the priority now was to block the road.

A Syrian security source told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the army had started a "cleansing operation" in the capital to confront rebel advances.

Residents said the Internet in Damascus crashed in the early afternoon and mobile and land telephone lines were functioning only intermittently.

A blog post on Renesys, a U.S. company which tracks Internet traffic worldwide, said that at 12:26 p.m. in Damascus, Syria's international Internet connectivity shut down completely.

Emirates said it was suspending daily flights to Damascus "until further notice", but other airlines continued operations.

Airport sources in Cairo said an Egypt Air flight that left at 1:30 p.m. (1130 GMT) had landed in Damascus as scheduled.

"The Egypt Air plane has arrived ... and passengers are all safe but the pilot was instructed to take off back to Cairo without passengers if he felt that the situation there is not good to stay for longer," an official at Cairo airport said.

Elsewhere in Damascus, warplanes bombed Kafr Souseh and Daraya, two neighborhoods that fringe the center of the city where rebels have managed to hide out and ambush army units, according to opposition activists.

"NOT LAST DAYS YET"

A senior European Union official said that Assad appeared to be preparing for a military showdown around Damascus, possibly by isolating the city with a network of checkpoints.

"The rebels are gaining ground but it is still rather slow. We are not witnessing the last days yet," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"On the outskirts of Damascus, there are mortars and more attacks. The regime is thinking of protecting itself ... with checkpoints in the next few days ... (It) seems the regime is preparing for major battle on Damascus."

In the north of the country, rebel units launched an offensive to seize an army base close to the main north-south highway that would allow them to block troop movements and cut Assad's main supply route to Aleppo, Syria's biggest city.

The Observatory said that rebel units from around Idlib province massed early on Thursday morning to attack Wadi al-Deif, a base east of the rebel-held town of Maarat al-Numan.

Wadi al-Deif has been a thorn in the side of rebel units who first besieged the station in October but met fierce resistance from government forces, backed up by air strikes.

Assad is fighting an insurgency that grew out of peaceful demonstrations for democratic reform but escalated, after a military crackdown on protesters, into a civil war in which 40,000 people have been killed.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad but stopped short of arming rebel fighters as they fear heavy weapons could make their way into the hands of radical Islamist units, who have grown increasingly prominent in the insurgency.

Rebels decry their supporters for not providing them with surface-to-air missiles that they say they need to counter the air force. But recent looting of anti-aircraft missiles from army bases has allowed them to shoot down helicopters and jets.

"So far, there is no evidence that any of the surface-to-air missiles used to date have come from outside Syria," said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch.

"The limited number of surface-to-air missiles that have shown up all appear to have come from Syrian military stock captured by the armed opposition."

He said the number of these missiles in rebel hands was probably over 20 but that will rise significantly as rebels are capturing military bases on an almost-daily basis.

The relatively small number of anti-aircraft missiles looted so far means that many rebel-controlled areas of the country remain vulnerable to air strikes. The Observatory said 15 citizens, including children and women, were killed during a bombing in Aleppo's Ansari district on Thursday.

Activist video footage showed the bodies of at least four children, wrapped in red blankets and apparently wearing pyjamas. Another video showed the immediate aftermath of the attack, with the bodies of children in the street and covered in cement dust. Half of one young boy's head was missing.

The Windows 8 Sales Data Is In, And It's Horrible ... - Business Insider

NPD research published some horrible news for Microsoft yesterday.

  • Despite releasing an entirely new operating system on October 22 of this year, Windows PC sales shrank 21% between 10/21 and 11/17 versus the same period last year.
  • Windows 8 tablet sales during that period were "almost nonexsistent" ? just 1% of all Windows 8 sales.

?It hasn?t made the market any worse, but it hasn?t stimulated things either,? Stephen Baker, an analyst at NPD, told the New York Times. ?It hasn?t provided the impetus to sales everybody hoped for.?

No kidding.

Yesterday, we reported other bad news:

  • Asus CFO David Chang's?comment that?"demand for Windows 8 is not that good right now."
  • Microsoft?cut its order of Surface tablets for the year to two million units, down from four million.

This is a very scary time for Microsoft.

Prototype Plugg radio dabbles in DAB, lets you put a cork in it

Clicking off the radio to rid your ears of an annoying DJ or an overplayed pop song is easy enough, but it could be more satisfying. How? Well, you could stuff a literal cork in your radio, of course. Normal speakers wouldn't be phased by mere wine stopper, but by design, the DAB compatible Plugg is. The project is the brainchild of Skrekkøgle, a pair of Norwegian designers, and was built to investigate the "physical and metaphorical interaction with electronic devices." The DIY project features a pair of volume buttons and the obvious cork for an on / off switch. There aren't any build instructions and the prototype isn't available for sale, but inspired builders can get a look at the speaker's construction (including a trip to the 3D printer) on the team's Flickr page. Head past the break to see the final product in action.

How native plants and exotics coexist

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? When people hear about exotic plants invading a new environment, there is usually a negative connotation, according to biology faculty member Matthew Heard in an article published in the journal Ecology Letters. They often think of plants like kudzu, Chinese privet, or Japanese honeysuckle, whose thuggish behavior can push out the native plants in their backyard or local parks.

While this worse case scenario can happen, it isn't always the case, said Heard, who wrote his Ph.D. dissertation at Brown University on how native and exotic plants coexist along the coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

"It turns out that in many places, native and exotic plants can actually live together," Heard said. "And this means that exotic plants aren't inherently bad like many people think, but it also means that it is important to figure out what is driving this balance between these two groups."

In his paper, Heard notes that there has been little experimental fieldwork conducted to determine what factors allows native and exotic plants to live side by side. While there have been many potential explanations tossed out, it turns out that just being different is the main reason that they can actually coexist together.

"Basically, we found that exotics plants grow more and can essentially out-compete natives, which normally is a problem. But in these communities there are also insects, which prefer to eat exotic plants instead of natives and can keep their growth in check. As a result, native plants, which are less susceptible to these insects can thrive even when exotic plants that are better competitors are nearby," said Heard.

How long this precarious balance will remain is unknown, but for now it isn't just the case of exotic species being problematic. Instead it's the story of how differences between two groups of plants allow them to survive along side each other.

"Killing Them Softly" review: crime comedy bludgeons us repeatedly with subtext

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - There's a great short film nestled inside of "Killing Them Softly," namely the two scenes between mob enforcer Jackie (Brad Pitt) and Mickey (James Gandolfini), the out-of-town hit man Jackie has hired to take care of a problem within the organization.

And while these two scenes aren't the only parts of the movie that work, the occasional moments of brilliance are far outweighed by the constant references to 2008's economic collapse and bank bailout. Having the radio or TV report this news once or twice to make a point about organized crime and capitalism? Fine. Shoehorning it into the film a dozen or so times? Enough already.

"Killing," based on George V. Higgins' novel "Cogan's Trade," follows the ripple effect of a hold-up on a mob-run card game. Johnny (Vincent Curatola, best known as Johnny Sack from "The Sopranos") sends low-lifes Frankie (Scoot McNairy, "Argo") and Russell (Ben Mendelsohn, "Animal Kingdom") to rob a poker game run by Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta).

Markie, you see, suffered a previous robbery, but then later revealed that he was the mastermind behind the crime. Johnny figures that if one of Markie's games gets hit again, everyone will assume that Markie is responsible. And Johnny's right.

Enter Jackie, summoned by the enigmatic Driver (Richard Jenkins), a guy so far up the chain that he comes off more like a district manager than a made man. They know that Markie is innocent, but the situation calls for him to be punished anyway, since perception is that he was the organizer. But there's also Frankie and Russell and Johnny to be dealt with, so Jackie brings in Mickey, who may or may not be up to the job of discreetly taking care of business.

The whole witty-gunman thing has been done to excess in the 20 years since "Reservoir Dogs," but one would have hoped that writer-director Andrew Dominik, coming off the brilliant and underrated "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," might have injected some new life into this sagging genre. And while the cast is consistently watchable and on-point, Dominik disappoints as both scenarist and filmmaker.

The plotting is wobbly, the narrative runs out of steam - and seriously, all the banking stuff gets unbearable after a while. (Mobsters apparently watch "Charlie Rose" and C-Span 24/7, if this movie is to be believed.)

So while you'll be seeing snippets of this film when cast members eventually start collecting career achievement awards, "Killing Me Softly" isn't going to blow too many people away.

Planting the Seeds for 2013 Business Success: 3 Strategic Tips for ...

?

One of the most important procedures to keep your business more successful than its competitors is to have a strong and stable strategic plan. A strategic plan will help define and prioritize key goals and objectives to help your company grow to new heights. Keep these 3 strategic planning tips in mind for your company:

1. Identify Realistic Goals

Setting obtainable goals for your company will allow for successes throughout. Each time goals are achieved, you are able to move to larger, more challenging goals. Keeping your goals realistic will help push your employees to accomplish new tasks and not settle for failure. Have a goal system where there are short-term and long-term goals set for both your company and each employee. Applying deadlines and check-ins on a quarterly, bi-annual or annual basis will help to track if your employees and company are meeting expectations.

2. Analyze ?Lifetime Value? and ?Life Cycle Management? For All Potential Clients

When analyzing different clients to work with it is important to look at their Lifetime Value with the company. This means to look beyond the first project or their initial budget and see what the lifespan of working together can bring. Often, when finding long-term clients, it will create stronger relationships, loyalty and understand of what will be delivered in comparison to client?s expectations. The second aspect is Life Cycle Management. After analyzing the lifespan look into what needs to be done to keep the relationship and what is all of their areas that can be improved?

3. Find The Right Fit

There will always be overarching goals and projects your company will strive to work towards, but it is not always in the company?s best interest to work toward one goal. Knowing the right fit for your company might mean to put a few goals on hold for the time being. This also might mean to turn down a few projects if they do not help your company move forward. Find the projects and/or clients that work well with your company and correlate with the realistic goals that have been set. If your goals are successful you will be successful, so keep this in mind when setting them.

New Mexico workers asked to pay more for retirement benefits

Posted at: 11/28/2012 3:20 PM
By: BARRY MASSEY Associated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - State and local government workers and educators could see their take-home pay shrink in the next several years under proposals to have them contribute more of their salaries for retirement benefits.

A legislative panel on Wednesday endorsed a pair of proposals to shore up the long-term finances of two programs for public employees - the retirement system for educators and a separate program offering health insurance to retirees from state and local government jobs as well as public schools and universities.

One proposal calls for nearly 62,000 educators to pay an extra $46 million over two years into their pension system.

Under another measure, 133,000 public employees, including educators, would pay $30 million over three years for retiree health care while taxpayers pay $60 million more.

Inspiration from Raymond Loewy for the Best Business PR

?

A lady, sitting next to Raymond Loewy at dinner, struck up a conversation.

?Why,? she asked ?did you put two Xs in Exxon??

?Why ask?? he asked.

?Because,? she said, ?I couldn?t help noticing??

?Well?, he responded, ?that?s the answer.?

-Source: Alan Fletcher, the author of ?The Art of Looking Sideways?

Raymond Loewy, the father of industrial design, created the Exxon logo in 1966 but it wasn?t introduced until six years later. From 1909 to 1980, Mr. Loewy?s accomplishments were enormous.

Not to understate his global impact, here?s a mere sample:

  • Air Force One?s sleek look for President John F. Kennedy
  • Boeing?s 307 interior in the 1930s
  • Coca-Cola bottle?s sleek look
  • John F. Kennedy postage stamp
  • Pennsylvania Railroad locomotives
  • Sears Coldspot refrigerator
  • Schick electric razors
  • Studebaker models (including my favorite as a teen, the Avanti)
  • U.S. Postal Service?s eagle logo

Not only did he create memorable designs, he was not shy. As a young news director at a Palm Springs all-news radio station in 1976, I once answered a telephone call, which was to become a career highlight.

?Hi, this is Raymond Loewy. I?m a listener. I really like your station. I?m taking a little time off from work and thought you might be interested in interviewing me.?

Mr. Loewy telephoned me after he had just finished designing the Air France Concorde interior, and the interior of NASA?s Skylab space station. That was heady stuff.

He was proud of his work, and was not ashamed to promote it. That was one of my first lessons about public relations. He knew how to make people notice his highly visible creations ? he was a walking press release. His enthusiasm was contagious.

So, as a former broadcast journalist and now as a writer and business-performance consultant, I have a long history with press releases. If they?re put together well, they work to create visibility.

Press releases ? multimedia

Fast forward to the 21st century ? now comes word of innovations in press releases. You can greatly enhance your press-release visibility ? by as much as 9.7 times ? if you use the right multimedia content according to a 2012 study by PR Newswire.

PR Newswire analyzed thousands of press releases that the company published from 2011 to 2012. It wanted to evaluate the impact of photos, videos and other downloadable content. The company released the data ? as you might expect ? in a press release.

The data shows that simply adding a photo to a text-only press release increases visibility by 1.8 times, while adding a video to a text-only release delivers 4.3 times the number of views.

Including both photo and video content further enhances a story, driving visibility by 7.4 times more than plain text releases.

The web analytics team at PR Newswire also compared releases with additional layers of assets including downloadable files such as PPTs, PDFs, and DOCs along with photos and videos.

Although the number of such stories was fewer than those with just photos and videos, they received even more visibility and interaction, representing the potential for releases with photos, videos and downloadable files to drive up to 9.7 times more visibility over text-only releases.

?Photos, videos, infographics and other types of multimedia assets present information in a more compelling and attractive way so it?s no surprise that they boost content visibility so significantly,? says Rod Nicolson, vice president, global reporting, PR Newswire.

?The volume of multimedia content distributed through PR Newswire is higher than it has ever been and it is extremely encouraging to see that our customers are embracing the power of multimedia to capture the attention of their audiences, build brand awareness and power content marketing initiatives,? Mr. Nicolson adds.

Certainly, Mr. Loewy would agree. You have to visually define your identity to get noticed.

Mr. Loewy?s official site: www.raymondloewy.com

From the Coach?s Corner, here are related press-release tips:

?You?re just anybody without your identity.?

U.S. budget deal hopes buoy global shares and commodities

LONDON (Reuters) - World shares hit three-week peaks and commodities were also higher on Thursday as comments from a senior U.S. lawmaker raised hopes of a budget deal by year-end to avoid a fiscal crisis in the world's biggest economy.

With Asian shares higher and the FTSEurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares adding 0.5 percent when trading opened, the MSCI global equities index <.miwd00000pus> was up 0.4 percent at 330.74 points, its highest since November 7.

U.S. shares jumped overnight after House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner voiced optimism that Republicans could broker a deal with the White House to avoid a $600 billion crunch of spending cuts and tax hikes dubbed the "fiscal cliff".

"The default assumption appears to be that a deal will be reached before the year-end deadline," said Ian Williams, equity strategist at Peel Hunt.

London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, Paris's CAC-40 <.fchi> and Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> were all up between 0.3 and 0.6 percent, adding to the week's gains.

As investors returned to riskier assets, the other side of the coin was a retreat from safe-haven German government bonds, pushing benchmark Bund futures down 18 ticks to 142.77.

The main focus of the day for bond markets will be a 6 billion euro auction of Italian 5- and 10- year debt, which should bring Rome close to completing its funding needs for the year and will give an indication of whether a recent rally in higher-yielding bonds will continue.

On the data front, the European Commission's latest sentiment survey will also be closely watched and is expected to show economic conditions in the bloc stabilized in November, albeit at a three-year low.

Italy's business sentiment survey and German unemployment data are also scheduled for release later in the day.

Commodity prices were also supported by the U.S. fiscal deal hopes. Crude oil futures rose 0.4 percent to $86.86 a barrel, and Brent inched up 0.3 percent to $109.82.

In currency markets, the euro was at $1.2960, well above Wednesday's intraday low of $1.2880.

The dollar, which has seen a corrective pull-back versus the yen since hitting a 7-1/2 month high, edged up 0.1 percent to about 82.15 yen.

"I can feel a bit of long dollar/yen fatigue setting in," said Jeffrey Halley, FX trader for Saxo Capital Markets in Singapore.

Kate Fridkis: Female Friendships Scared Me, Until I Met The One

I am always waiting for women to leave me.

Like the guy who doesn't call back after what seemed like a perfect second date, like the breakup that never makes sense even though the other person seems to be trying to explain, I am never sure of the reasons why they disappeared. I dig through my memories, unearthing things that look like they might be clues. Things that have been broken a long time and are probably better off left there, underground.

I have fought passionately with boyfriends. I've yelled and stormed and stomped out and slammed the door and disappeared into the night for a while until I realize I'm just wandering around a parking lot and someone is probably going to murder me and the fantastically successful dramatic exit is probably not worth all that. I have a flair for the dramatic with men. But with women, I am gentle.

Since I was 12 or even sooner, I've had best friends -- girls I dressed up with in endless rounds of playacting, had sleepovers with and wrote letters to, illustrating the envelopes. These friends have tended to get mysteriously hurt or bored or something else and leave over the years without telling me why. Or they've abruptly betrayed me in some teenaged, heartbreaking manner. There was the girl I worshipped who started dating my boyfriend, just after I'd broken up with him. But she didn't tell me -- instead, she showed up with him one day, just like that, and made it clear that we were no longer friends. I couldn't believe she'd chosen him over the stories I'd written with her about our shared future, where we had little farm houses down the road from each other in New Hampshire, and I came over for Christmas even though I am Jewish, and our kids played together and eventually married each other.

I was best friends with my roommate in college until she stopped taking her medication, and then she hated me for everything. Just before she hated me, she used to crawl into my bed at night, crying, and I didn't know what to do. When we separated, she kept my best underwear. The red lace ones she'd "borrowed" without asking. The only really sexy underwear I've ever owned.

And then in grad school, there was my brilliant blonde friend who left my life without a word after she signed my wedding contract, just below my own signature. I think it was because I asked her if she wanted foie gras when I took her out for her birthday, and a split second later I remembered that of course she was a vegetarian. Was that disgust in her face? It seems more apparent every time I play back the scene.

I think I've learned to close myself off. Not from being friendly or having lunch or having long talks or lounging on the couch with a woman I care about. Not from having friends -- I find I have many of them now. But from believing innately in them. From automatically trusting them to be there when I am lonely or when I am afraid but not the right kind of afraid to immediately tell my husband. From counting on them to text back, or text in the first place. I have exonerated them from all responsibility -- I don't expect them to check in on me. If they do, it's a pleasant surprise, they really didn't have to.

I care about the people in my life, and I want to be there for them. I write their birthdays on my calendar, I buy them flowers sometimes, when they succeed at something they've been trying for. I listen. I am not joking around, it's for real. I invest in them. It's just that I am not holding my breath. There's a leap of faith I haven't taken in a long time. The chasm looks wider now. As a kid, I had boundless confidence. I used to climb out my window onto the roof and then I'd climb to the peak and I never thought about falling.

Recently, I've become friends with an editor who is helping me with a book I'm writing. In between edits, we started talking about our lives and it turns out that she is cocky and dorky at the same time -- combined with self-awareness, vulnerability and intelligence that is pretty much my favorite thing in the world. We've never met in person, and a couple of weeks ago she said that maybe we should get together. She lives near Chicago. The same day, we made travel plans for her to come visit, with both of us paying for it.

"How long should I stay?" she asked.

"A week," I said (we both work from home).

And just like that, I made myself available.

"Are you sure?" she said.

"Of course!"

She's getting here tonight.

Of course, I'm nervous.

"Calm down," said my husband, "She'll like our sushi place," when I began agonizing over where to take my visiting friend to dinner. Will she? What if she can get better sushi at home? What if she is bored? What if she gets annoyed by that weird throat-clearing tic I have? Once a guy asked me if I had Tourette syndrome. But he said it was cute. I don't know.

That's the thing about making yourself available -- it's pretty clear that you care. It's pretty clear that you want to trust this other person. This other woman who might make you feel like shedding all your secrets or like retreating into them.

I miss being able to trust other women, though. I miss knowing that when something goes wrong, there's someone to call, even if it's the middle of the night. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I haven't given my friends enough of a chance. They might want to be there for me, you never know. They might want to get closer.

They might want to hang out for an entire week.

Universal files lawsuit against "Fifty Shades" porn "rip-off"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood's Universal Studios has filed a copyright lawsuit against a porn production company, accusing it of lifting language, characters and plot from the best-selling erotic book trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey" for its own adult films and sex toys.

Calling one of the adult movie adaptations of the British novel "a rip-off plain and simple," Universal's lawsuit seeks to stop sales of copycat porn movies and to recoup any profits they earn.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" by E.L. James and its two sequels have sold more than 40 million copies since first being published in 2011. Universal bought the rights for a film adaptation earlier this year for a reported $5 million.

The suit was filed jointly in federal court in California on Tuesday by Universal and James's British company which owns the copyright to the novels.

The lawsuit said that Los Angeles-based based Smash Pictures had produced a movie called "Fifty Shades of Grey: a XXX Adaptation" which lifted "exact dialogue, characters, events, story, and style from the 'Fifty Shades' trilogy."

"The first XXX adaptation is not a parody, and it does not comment on, criticize, or ridicule the originals. It is a rip-off, plain and simple," the lawsuit added.

Smash Pictures could not be reached for comment.

Universal said Smash Pictures had two subsequent movies in production and that one of its subsidiaries had also launched a "Play Kit" of kinky sex toys called "Fifty Shades of Pleasure."

The lawsuit seeks an injunction, unspecified damages, and profits from sales of the movies, which it says are trademark and copyright infringements.

Finding Fish Tanks for Sale | Pets Care

Fish are among the most rewarding and common pets kept by mankind. This is because keeping them does not consume much of your time like birds, dogs or cats. Additionally, the sight of an aquarium in your house is always pleasant to behold. However, you need to carry out some research and do a little planning in order to get things done properly. One of the things to consider is finding fish tanks for sale. Also, after getting your tank, you must think about cleaning and maintenance in order to properly preserve the water creatures.

Before deciding to buy your fishes, it is important to consider the type of tank that will be ideal. There are different shapes and sizes of them available for you to choose from. If you are considering your budget, you can decide to go for lower cost ones. The square shaped ones made from glass are usually the cheapest. But if the money is not your problem, you may go for the sophisticated ones made from acrylic instead of glass. For first timers in keeping sea pets, it is better to find a smaller that which will be easier for them to control and equally cheaper. You also have the option of upgrading to something bigger as time goes on. You wouldn?t need an acrylic tank in the beginning because it scratches a little bit easier and is always provided with some sort of support.

One thing to note is that one tank might be perfect for a particular room size, while in another kind of room, it might not suit very well. For example, a corner fish tank will be ideal for a room with an open space at the corner of the house. There are many places you can find fish tanks for sale. Cheap ones are just ideal if you are simply trying it out for the first time. Aquariums are better placed in the living room or in a hallway that is wide enough. You can decorate them with lighting and filtering solutions in order to make them appear better.

If you are on a short budget and you can?t afford the expensive aquariums, you can find ones with low price. You can decide to go used ones and save a lot of money compared to buying a new aquarium. Though they are second hand, they might still be in very good condition. There are so many places to find fish tanks for sale. There are classified adverts, auction sites and local stores where you can see them. Ensure that you compare prices in order to get the best possible deal.

Egypt state TV: Highest appeal court suspends work nationwide to protest president's decrees

With 47 percent of the popular vote, Mitt Romney may become the president of nothing more than Ironystan. Yes, the final general-election tally is trickling in and, as fate would have it, Romney's total might look more like that mythical number after all. Well, according to David Wasserman of the Cook Political report, it's more like 47.49 and dropping, which, of course rounds down to 47 ? the same percentage of Americans?he said were moochers and takers in a video?that was one of the nails in the coffin of his presidential campaign.

ANALYSIS: Egypt learns the art of politics amid protests

Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi, who had granted himself sweeping new powers that would have made all of his rulings immune to judicial review, is facing continued public outcry despite his decision to soften the decree by limiting those rulings to 'sovereign' matters. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

By Ayman Mohyeldin, NBC News

News analysis

Last week?s sweeping power grab by Egypt?s President Mohammed Morsi has thrown the country?s political elite into crisis, and prompted tens of thousands of Egyptians to take to the streets in protest. But much of the fury over his most recent moves probably has more to do with the way he chose to act than what he has actually done.

The conflict roiling the Arab world?s most populous country has been painted by some international observers and many regular Egyptians as a struggle between autocratic Islamists and democratic secularists. Indeed, Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood party have angered many with how they managed to win power democratically and then tried to consolidate it by decrees.

In a move quickly pounced on by critics, Morsi?s decree last week gave the body charged with writing a draft constitution two more months to finish its work. The decree essentially prevents challenges to the president's rule until the end of the two-month transitional period so that any decision made by Morsi cannot be questioned by the judiciary.

If the so-called constituent assembly, the elected constitutional body that is now dominated by Islamists, would have dissolved, it would have been seen as a victory by many liberal and secular Egyptians.

But Morsi?s decree will allow the assembly to finish its essential work, Henry Smith of the international consultancy Control Risks told NBC News.

'Leave, leave': Egyptians gather in Cairo's Tahrir Square to protest president's decree

"There was a risk that the body writing the constitution would be disbanded by legal judgments but according to his decree, we should see a draft in February," he added. "And if that is decided then we could have a new constitution by mid-2013."

As the struggle of the constituent assembly shows, Morsi and his government have been locked in a struggle with the judiciary.

And however dictatorial Morsi?s recent moves may have been, the judiciary is no paragon of democracy. Indeed, even many of the Brotherhood?s opponents think the judiciary is corrupt and packed with loyalists of deposed dictator Hosni Mubarak.

The lack of accountability for the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolution illustrates why many Egyptians do not trust the judiciary. None of the former regime officials brought to trial for these deaths has been convicted.

The judiciary also upheld the dissolution of parliament, halting essential efforts, such as reforming fiscal and economic policies meant to liberalize and jump-start the economy.

According to liberal and secular parties, the president ?didn't consult with them before issuing his decree on Thursday -- a claim disputed by Morsi's Freedom and Justice Party ? thus losing the opportunity to be seen as a leader willing to reach across political divides and interested in creating consensus.

And those protesting his power grab have reason to be suspicious. After all, Mubarak promised to be a one-term president at the beginning of what ended up as a 30-year rule.

In the end, Egypt is new to the art of politics and its actors unused to sharing power and debating issues publicly.

As international consultant Smith says: "Putting aside some of the autocratic elements of his recent decree, Morsi?s move could be seen as a positive move."

Thousands of Egyptians flood Cairo's Tahrir Square in protest of President Morsi, demanding he rescind decrees that granted him near-absolute powers. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Egypt.

Moral evaluations of harm are instant and emotional

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? People are able to detect, within a split second, if a hurtful action they are witnessing is intentional or accidental, new research on the brain at the University of Chicago shows.

The study is the first to explain how the brain is hard-wired to recognize when another person is being intentionally harmed. It also provides new insights into how such recognition is connected with emotion and morality, said lead author Jean Decety, the Irving B. Harris Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at UChicago.

"Our data strongly support the notion that determining intentionality is the first step in moral computations," said Decety, who conducted research on the topic with Stephanie Cacioppo, a research associate (assistant professor) in psychology at UChicago. They published the results in a paper, "The Speed of Morality: A High-Density Electrical Neurological Study," to be published Dec. 1 and now on early preview in the Journal of Neurophysiology.

The researchers studied adults who watched videos of people who suffered accidental harm (such as being hit with a golf club) and intentional harm (such as being struck with a baseball bat). While watching the videos, brain activity was collected with equipment that accurately maps responses in different regions of the brain and importantly, the timing between these regions. The technique is known as high-density, event-related potentials technology.

The intentional harm sequence produced a response in the brain almost instantly. The study showed that within 60 milliseconds, the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (also known as TPJ area), located in the back of the brain, was first activated, with different activity depending on whether the harm was intentional or accidental. It was followed in quick succession by the amygdala, often linked with emotion, and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (180 milliseconds), the portion of the brain that plays a critical role in moral decision-making.

There was no such response in the amygdala and ventromedial prefrontal cortex when the harm was accidental.

Other studies with functional MRI scans, including those in Decety's lab, have shown that those areas of the brain become activated when people see others intentionally harmed, but those studies have been unable to separate or time the way the various parts of the brain may work together.

"High-density ERPs can identify spatio-temporal patterns of communication between regions that contrast analyses (such as fMRI) with low temporal resolution may not detect, and such methods are necessary to advance knowledge of neuroscience of morality," said Cacioppo.

The ability to recognize and respond emotionally to the intentional infliction of harm is a critical source of morality that is universal across cultures, researchers believe. "It is part of humans' evolutionary heritage," Decety said. "The long history of mammalian evolution has shaped our brains to be sensitive to signs of suffering of others. And this constitutes a natural foundation for morality and sensitivity to justice."

Philosophers have debated the origins of this moral response for ages. Some maintain that moral judgments begin with an immediate aversive reaction to perceived or imagined harm to victims, though the full moral judgment may form only after the fact. Other philosophers maintain that moral principals develop from reason alone and are not connected to emotion.

The new research suggests that emotion and the perception of intentionality, rather than deliberate reasoning, comprise the vital first component of moral responses -- at least for responses that stem from care for others Decety said.

The research may help inform other areas of neurodevelopment research, including studies of the moral responses of psychopaths and of children who lack empathy for others, displaying what are called callous-unemotional traits.

The National Science Foundation and the Swiss National Science Foundation supported the research.

Hello Hello

Obviously i'm new to the site, but I'm far from new to role-playing. Found this place accidentally while browsing google, and I figured I would take a look see. I do have some questions, how active is it, some of the top rp's on the home page seem pretty old or deadish, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. I'd also like to know how good are the average RP's here, I'm generally apprehensive about joining communities like this due to things like Gaia and Neopets which are over saturated with brain numbing rps, and I'd like to try an avoid that.

Ex-UA interim basketball coach Russ Pennell is moving up to the WAC

Russ Pennell hugs Arizona point guard Nic Wise after the Wildcats defeated Cleveland State to advance to the 2009 Sweet 16. Photo by David Wallace/The Arizona Republic

Russ Pennell, fondly remembered at Arizona for leading the Wildcats to the Sweet 16 after coach Lute Olson retired before the 2008-09 season, is moving back to Division I.

Pennell is in his fourth year as the head coach at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, and the Antelopes will be joining a reconfigured WAC for the 2013-14 season, the league announced Tuesday.

Grand Canyon is a currently a Division II program.

?The big thing is it?s going to be an incredible challenge that we look forward to and we embrace,? Pennell told the Arizona Republic, our Gannett partner.

?For my staff and I, we didn?t wake up this morning and go, ?Oh, my gosh, we?re going Division I.? We?ve been working on this for three years, laying the foundation. Now that it?s here, we can take the next step. But it?s definitely a crowning day.?

With Grand Canyon becoming a Division I basketball program, perhaps we?ll see the Antelopes eventually be a regular on Arizona?s schedule, as is NAU. The Lumberjacks play at UA on Wednesday night.

Conference realignment has shredded the WAC, which is disbanding for football after this season but continuing in other sports. The WAC turned to Grand Canyon when it needed a quick replacement for new member Denver, which announced it was leaving for the Summit League.

The Antelopes will join Cal State-Bakersfield, Idaho, New Mexico State, Seattle and Utah Valley in the WAC. Grand Canyon won?t be immediately eligible for the NCAA tournament as it completes its transition to the higher division.

And, as noted by baseballtucson.com, Grand Canyon?s move to the WAC means an opportunity for Tucson kids to play Division I baseball. The Antelopes have four local players on their roster: sophomore outfielder Nick Chapman, sophomore catcher Lucas Leifeld and freshman pitcher Tommy Harding (all from Sabino), and freshman pitcher Hunter Miller from Salpointe Catholic.

Several other former high school athletes from the Tucson area compete at Grand Canyon as well.

Lomography Diana F+

The Lomography Diana F+ ($89 direct) is the classic toy camera. It's shoddily constructed from flimsy-feeling material, uses a plastic lens that is anything but sharp, and is prone to light leaks?but that's all part of its charm. If you're a fan of the Instagram look, and are willing to put the extra time and money in to shoot with film, the Diana F+ is an appealing camera. But it's definitely not for those who value image sharpness above all.

The camera is washed in a black and teal color scheme, with a teal flash. It measures about 3.75 by 5 by 3 inches and is quite light, thanks to its plasticky build. The lens is a 75mm focal length with three aperture settings?they're labeled sunny, partly sunny, and cloudy, but in reality they are f/11, f/16, and f/22. There's also an f/150 pinhole setting; to utilize that you'll need to remove the lens by twisting it off. The standard shutter speed is 1/60 of a second, but there's also a bulb setting that will keep the shutter open for as long as you hold the lever release down, and a shutter lock that can be used for very long exposures?the type you'll need to capture pinhole imagery. The removable lens also lets you replace it with a fisheye, wide-angle, or telephoto optic?each of which sells for around $30. The film advances via a manual dial, and if you'd like to take a double exposure, you can simply fire the shutter again without winding.

The Diana F+ includes a detachable flash, which makes it useable as an indoor camera?it's relatively slow aperture will make most indoor use difficult, even with very fast film. If you use color negative or black and white film, you'll have some room to guess exposures based on the aperture logos?ISO 400 speed is an appropriate estimate for the settings, as it generally has a good amount of wiggle room with the exposure. If you're planning on shooting with slide film you'll have to be a bit more cautious, and a light meter is recommended there?for best results, take a reading first and then load the appropriate film speed based on the conditions you're under.

There's an optical viewfinder to frame photos, but it's not the most accurate at closer distances. It shows the square aspect ratio of which the camera is capable. If you shoot photos without the included exposure mask you end up with shots that fill a 6-by-6-centimeter frame, but show heavy darkening around the edges. There's a mask included that reduces the photo size, but eliminates the vignette?personally, my preference is to shoot the whole frame. Chances are you'll be scanning negatives or prints for online sharing, and you can always crop photos at that stage in the game.

If you're looking to get into the hipster-throwback photo scene, there isn't a more classic toy camera than the Diana F+ with which to get started. Its plastic lens captures dreamy images, and it's actually a pretty versatile toy camera thanks to its pinhole capability, interchangeable lens functionality, and the included detachable flash. Medium format film is readily available online, and while most drug stores won't process it onsite, they will send it out. If you want to scan your negatives for online sharing you can do so at home with a flatbed scanner with support for transparencies. The big negatives offer a lot of resolution, so you'll be able to pull more detail out of them when compared with 35mm film. Sure, you can use a smartphone with Instagram or Hipstamatic and add some blur filters to the edges of your image, and you'll have the versatility of being able to change from color to black-and-white with a tap on your phone's screen, but sacrificing that convenience makes it possible to capture surreal images on actual film?a tactile feeling that can't be matched by phone cameras and software filters.

The GOES-R Series Program, which is leading the effort to replace and upgrade NOAA's existing fleet of geostationary satellites that track severe weather across the United States, received a favorable appraisal conducted by an external team of aerospace experts of its preparations to launch the new series, beginning in late 2015.

"Severe weather was again a major story in America this year," said Mary Kicza, assistant administrator of NOAA's Satellite and Information Service. "Passing this Mission Critical Design Review gives us confidence that the GOES-R Program's development is progressing well and will be ready to carry the latest technology to help improve NOAA's weather forecasts."

At all times, NOAA operates two Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) from a fixed position, 22,300 miles above the Earth. Additionally, NOAA keeps one GOES in orbital storage mode, ready to step in if one of the active satellites experiences trouble. NOAA's geostationary satellites constantly monitor all weather conditions, from tornadoes, floods and snowstorms, to wildfires and developing tropical storms. Instruments on GOES also monitor solar activity.

NOAA's GOES-13, which is the GOES East satellite, proved its mettle when Sandy threatened the Caribbean and the U.S., sending more than 1,200 images of the storm to NOAA forecasters, from October 20-31, as it approached -- and then impacted -- the Eastern seaboard.

NOAA manages the GOES-R Series Program through an integrated NOAA-NASA program office, staffed with personnel from NOAA and NASA, and co-located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. Beginning with the first scheduled launch in 2015, the four GOES-R Series satellites will extend the GOES system through 2036.

The GOES-R satellites are expected to more than double the clarity of today's GOES imagery and provide more atmospheric observations than current capabilities with more frequent images. Data from the GOES-R instruments will be used to create many different products that will help NOAA meteorologists and other users monitor the atmosphere, land, ocean and the sun. GOES-R will also carry a new Geostationary Lightning Mapper that will provide for the first time a continuous surveillance of total lightning activity throughout the Americas and adjacent oceans.

The satellite and instruments are procured and managed by NASA as part of the GOES-R Program at NASA Goddard. "This is a critical milestone in our program," said Pam Sullivan, project manager of the GOES-R Flight Project at NASA Goddard. "We have now completed spacecraft design and are transitioning into fabrication as we prepare to integrate the GOES-R instruments."

"We're just a few years away from seeing significant improvements in the way NOAA will serve the public with better weather forecasts and warnings," said Greg Mandt, director of the GOES-R Series Program. "That's something everyone should be excited about."

###

NOAA's mission is to understand and predict changes in the Earth's environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun and to conserve and manage our coastal and marine resources.
